Martin Briones

Martin Briones is an American born musician, singer-song writer, music producer and recording artist from Virginia Beach, Virginia. He is part of the triumvirate that forms SkyHigh Music. SkyHigh Music’s collective body of music production includes production with commercials (Chevrolet Asia), films (Three21 Films), video games (NBA2k), and major and independent recording artists. Their innovative sampling, musicianship, layering, and structuring, brings together an aesthetically and emotionally rewarding expression of music that makes it unique from all other works of music.

Early life & Beginnings
Martin Briones was born in Jacksonville, FL, to a mix raced couple. His father is a retired Filipino Navy officer while his mother is a teacher, of Scottish descent. Coming from a military family he had the unique opportunity in acquiring a wide array of musical influences from the different regions of the world. He has lived in Florida, California, Philadelphia, New Jersey, New York and Scotland, but was mainly raised in Virginia Beach, VA. Martin’s musically entailed family background includes a father who is a self-taught guitarist, mother who was a singer, both his brothers are musicians who formed their own punk-rock band The Razor Kings (GoKingdom.net) and his cousin, Lilly Aycud, a highly acclaimed trumpet player. Martin's musical evolution started at an early age where he first remembers memorizing, reciting and performing popular songs. He started taking piano lessons at age eight, and trumpet lessons three years later. In his early teen years, Martin showcased his creativity and musical ability through DJ-ing, song-writing & rapping. At 16, he decided to change his hoop dreams to a life dedicated to music. Around this time he was introduced to the production side of music by family friend Chad Hugo, of Neptunes and N.E.R.D. By 18, Martin had established his first, which turned out to be a well known studio (SkyHigh Studios VA) in the back of his father’s barbershop. Shortly after, he and his partners moved to NY/NJ to further pursue their musical aspirations and opened SkyHigh Studios NJ. Giving them access to the major record labels based in New York City they further built up their catalog and clientele.

Musical Style
Martin Briones gathers inspiration from legendary icons’ such as Stevie Wonder, Isley Brothers, Sade, Jodeci, Rakim, Big Pun and Jay Z. Martin is a true artist and student of music. He looks at his musical journey as a "continuous learning experience, where ideas and inspiration are manifested into music". He has lived and grown with the culture that inspires popular music of today. Drawing from his well travelled past he blends a well thought out sum of different styles and genres. An official "HipHop Head" at heart, he can still flawlessly incorporate varying ranges to his music; where he can't only be categorized as a rapper or singer and would prefer to be known for his keen songwriting and production capabilities.

Future
Continuing to create relevant but timeless music, Martin has decided to come from behind the scenes and release his own album "AHEAD OF MYSELF" and continues to write and produce for other artists.

RANDOM INTERVIEW with LuckyQball

I recently talk to Luckyqball of Yogafiyah
ano nga bang napag usapan namin?
read below:

PHS: Can you give us a little preview of your career. i mean introduce yourself to us

Luckyqball: I wasn't always into writing bars and rapping, I was more into slow jams and RnB. as kid, but my older family friends got me into Wu-Tang Clan, listening to all that cursing and raw energy blew my mind away. I used to write a lot of poetry and songs as a teen growing up in Kalibo, Aklan, when I discovered pool halls, my mind was made up I wanted to be a pool player..lol
and as I flew back to UK for school, I still looked for pool halls, and hung out with loads of filipinos, as there is a massive community in London alone. and within that community I came across Aziatik.

One of the leaders of Lirikong Supremo, him, T-Max and Kyd, this is where I discovered tagalog rap, Delicado (net rap, Yahoo messenger battles, other emcees back home, all that goodness) and my mind was blown. I wrote a hook for Azi one time, and since then, I always got involved with the music and production, and started to write bars, and practice freestyling, eventually I teamed up with Azi on his production team Th1rd3ye productions.

As we started meeting other emcees in the pinoy community, we created a bond with them, and did Pinoy hip hop events around UK, just to let the people know , Pinoy Hip Hop in UK exists, every year there are a new generation of hip hop heads, who love tagalog rap, that don't know its in UK, so we always show love every Barrio fiesta, and do a show here and there outside of the festival.

Eventually Azi started his clothing Company Supreme elements clothing and I moved onto Yoga Fiyah, handled by KyD. Before the transition I've made The Bits and Pieces Mixtape, and the Black Sheep mixtape which I put out there for free, and its on youtube to rip off too.... I SEE the PIRATES

PHS: Can you also link that one to us? So you are more into this internet rap thingy? What it is like to perform from the UK? how do the crowd responded?

Luckyqball: www.yogafiyah.com all the tapes at the bottom by our team.
Internet rap? nah g, I see Hip Hop as my culture! Technology has changed the way the music business is, internet rap was my introduction to tagalog rap, and being filipino by blood made me happy to be part of a really unique Independent label, here in UK.

Luckyqball:
Performing to people in UK? its all the same, from 8 people in a room, to over 5000 people, I just do my best, and drop the peeps some knowledge, and sometimes give them what they want to hear, I was always stubborn starting out not making tracks to please people, always writing tracks to please me, then as I have crafted over the years, I've learnt to mix what I like to what is appealing to my audience. My team rap in tagalog! I don't.... there is always a mixed reaction... some kids love them who ain't even got filipino blood in them, some kids wish they could understand tagalog, to get with the lyrics, cos they love the flow of backy, bangz, jphee and kyd...

some uk born filipinos switch off cos they have no clue of any tagalog vocabulary
and then you have the filipinos from back home, who just arrived to live in UK trying to get my ass to rap in tagalog... its a madness....

all in all, we have had support from Philippines thanks for the internet, and also our local pinoy community.... But only recently have I been pushing my music more part time from my work, in fact I see my music as not only my passion because of my culture, but also my part time work.

PHS: Can i ask why you didn't rap in tagalog? Just a curious question

Luckyqball: Yeah, I mean I tried, but I was born in London, grew up here and I lived in Aklan for four years, adjusting in the first 2 years learning Aklanon, not deep Aklanon either, so my tagalog was basic, till I got back to London when I was 15, bumping into tagalog kids maybe two years later? picking up the mainland dialect through them again.... the tagalog vocabulary is very deep, I don't understand every word, imagine asking a guy in tagalog who isn't deep in vocabularyb on english to write english bars? i'm still crafting, maybe in future, i'ma put out some tagalog rap too

PHS: Thats nice, i just ask because I've seen foreign rap artist trying their very best to adapt the language too just to reach out for other people no matter if the language is perfect or not.
do you have plans of coming here in the philippines? and perform here?
other than your group do you plan to have collabos as well?

Luckyqball: I do, at the same time, I have priorities, that need to be sorted out here in UK, but I will never forget that pinoy culture

I don't mind collabing with anyone, but most of the time, people that I've worked with in the past don't finish up on their end, funny you ask, I'm working on a collaboration mix download freebie as we speak

PHS: Is this mixtape up for grabs? how do you sell your craft i mean do you gain from it?

Luckyqball: I actually have a track on bits and pieces where i drop four bars in tagalog, its just to point out I can rap in tagalog, but it just wouldn't sound great

PHS: I know the feeling your a bit perfectionist and that not a bad thing.

Luckyqball: I have a current project called Always on the table, which will be available on online distribution in the near future, it should be up on i-tunes, amazon, deezer, spotify.... so hold tight for that

PHS: In your own opinion how big is your market lately? And so a your fan base?

Luckyqball: The other collaborations mixtape is a secretish project cos, I just want it to be ready rather than hype it up before i tell people about it... collaborations can be tricky when people don't stick to deadlines.

PHS: hahaha i get that.

Luckyqball: I've always seen myself as the Joker of the pack of cards in Yoga Fiyah, my team stand out more as far as the filipino rap audience.
Only recently have I been pushing more on making projects, as Performing isn't enough for people I come across, at festivals, and open mics....  I feel my fan base are the fans of Yoga Fiyah as a teamat the Moment I'm yet to see my personal fanbase, but I reckon I can fill a regular event with 50 people of my followers. at a show

Hence why I am pushing more collabs outside of my Yoga Fiyah team recently.

PHS: Who leads this yoga fiyah?

Luckyqball: Kyd is the production leader of Yoga Fiyah team, when we work on projects, he leads the way, but at the same time, he allows us to work on our personal projects.

PHS: Kyd is good he establish a name from himself. So to wrap it up, what can you say to people who follows you, support you.

Luckyqball:
Well to all those who support me, KEEP supporting, keep purchasing music I am starting to sell, and you will see loads more tracks for free download, I'm not gonna change for just the money.
Tell your friends about me, your friends friends, and talk about my tracks on social media, push it on facebook, twitter, all that goodness.

Sam Rhansum give props to PHS

so today i read this from sir Sam Rhansum himself

"10-30-13 Today I am thankful for Pinoy HiphopSuperstar. This is gonna get personal, so bear with me. I have spent my life as an “outsider”. A little southern boy who never developed the “accent”. Then a little white boy “rapping” and “making beats”. No matter how many awards, battles won, stages rocked you end up just “good for a white boy”. Never just “good”. I had to fight to earn respect. And I kinda developed a chip on my shoulder to prove my worth. Then I came here to the Philippines. And it started all over. Once again an “outsider”. Now not just my skin color, but my nationality, my history and my swagger. The board was erased and I was once again judged on the outside. And the culture here doesn't see the “chip” the same way. You walk into a joint back home with a smile, you look "weak" and you’ll get eaten alive. You DON’T walk into a joint here with a smile, but this skin color and swagger you look like an asshole. I had to loose the “chip”. But I still wondered if I would ever be accepted here. Some still don’t. But most have seen the heart and the desire to work with good people on good music. Regardless of race, or even language. I STILL don’t know who runs the PHS site. But my inclusion in it a year or so ago meant THE WORLD to me. Someone, who puts their time and efforts into supporting and promoting the local artists, considered me local. And most important considered me “part” of the scene. And for that I am TRULY THANKFUL."

---
I’m actually having troubles getting online lately because I get busy to work, and personal life And sometimes because I’m just plain lousy, or bored of the things I usually do, and appreciation like this inspires me because I remember doing PHS page without even any clue of what I am doing I just love making cards and hate not knowing people that I respect, like when I search about Nimbus 9 or Zikk I don’t know what they look like, that’s the very main reason of me doing the thing, later on it became something of a movement, people in the hip hop community appreciates what I do, they get inspired by it too, and when they do that pumps me up, and get inspired that PHS is something worth all my effort.

Talk about something with the caliber of Sir Sam Rhansum, most of them (international artist) helps us,
Most of them are actually more pinoy than us, they embrace our culture with all of their hearts, some are even better tagalog speaker than us or at least love our country way better. He’s inclusion in the PHS is all worth it, he has done nothing but to keep helping pinoys emcees, producers(Battle of the beats anyone?)
and pinoy hip-hop as a whole.  So I will say this again YOU ARE WORTHY to be in PHS sir, and more than welcome in the Pinoy Hip-hop community. THANKS AS WELL. - PHS

Young Kasper

Kyle Esguerra aka "Young Kasper",

due to my boyish looks. I am 25 years old. I was born in Los Angeles, CA. I have been rapping and writing since high school. After I graduated, I pursued a career in the Philippines. I was an upcoming rap artist, but my manager had decided that I should focus on acting and modeling first. This was due to my looks and open mind to branch out into other aspects of entertainment. I joined a talent show called “Starstuck 4: The Next Level”.I'm blending hip-hop with radio hype. I'm not the type to say "I hate commercial music" because I don't. I'm also not the type to say "I will always be underground". Whether it's underground or commercial. Good music is good music. My influences are Eminem, B.O.B., Jay-Z. I am very confident in my writing skills and would love to write music for pop and r&b artists.

Jae Spillz

Jae Spillz

In a cut throat industry where your first hit could be your last it has bread the emcee known to many as Jae Spillz. The name Jae Spillz refering to the letter "j" as his goverment name being "Jonathan" and spillz being used as a metaphor to "rhyme spiller" givin to him in 2001 cuz of his witty word play and ability to put rhymes together in no time began rapping as early as 1996 but didnt really take off till about 2002-2003 when he made the move to the philippines for a bit over a year. From there they conquered many milestones not to many people have done. Only within 3 months of his stay with former partner Kenjhons they were able to land a offer with Universal Records under the Management of ALV. Due to circumstances the duo decided to split up with jae spillz returning to toronto and kenjhons moving foward with plans of birthing the Philippine Allstars dance crew. The music didnt stop there, on his own jae spillz kept going with his music but throughout the years it saw many bumps in the road. In 2010, jae spillz and co partner Red Brown decided to take it upon themselves to introduce the Third World Council. A diverse group of musical and media talent joined through the influence of music and visuals. Now with his team formed they range from many diffrent talents. Reggae artist , vocalists, photographers, videographers, producers, mixing engineers and so much more. Only in time will it be known where and what's in store for the Filipino Mc.. till then will just sit back and enjoy the music....

Ello C

Ello C aka Charles Elloso, a self explanatory stage name arising from previous aliases and simplicity. With a stage delivery filled with passion seen and heard there is also no doubt he is one to look out for.

Deriving a style from hip-hop's most influential and kick starting his ability to announce words with speed, rhyme and rhythm. He remains working towards the drive to produce his original sound with no holds barred as to whats to follow from his grind.

Where to next? The night is young and for this young rapper bursting with one of the rawest energies noticed and having no care about the pressures of society for what it wants him to be, the vast horizon is the only limit. - Michelle Anne.

Native Guns

Native Guns

was an American rap group that consisted of two Filipino American MC's and a Chinese American DJ from California. Based in both Los Angeles and the San Francisco Bay Area, the group consists of MCs Kiwi and Bambu, and DJ Phatrick. Their name is a play on the name of the Native Tongues Posse which rose to popularity by offering a musical style that was alternative to the Gangsta rap genre in the late 1980s and early 1990s. The group first collaborated in 2002 and recorded one full-length studio album and two mixtapes before their breakup in 2007.

Influences

Drawing from a diverse style of wide-musical influences, the Guns' sound is classified as ranging from hard-edged to reggae-influenced to outright boom bap. Primarily consisting of English, as is the standard for the majority of Filipino American hip hop groups, the duo's lyrics fuse Tagalog in their tracks as well. This method of interchanging English and Tagalog, known as Taglish, is used by both Filipinos and Filipino Americans to place emphasis on certain words or fragments of sentences.

In their lyrics, the group emphasizes social justice and pride in their heritage, as well as solidarity with other people of color. Their lyrics also address the Filipino people's struggles in both in the Philippines as well as in America. Both American President George W. Bush and Philippine President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo are often criticized in their songs for their treatment of working-class citizens.

Solo careers

Kiwi, also known as Kiwi Illafonte or Young Bonifacio, is a Los Angeles native now residing in the San Francisco Bay Area who has been an integral part of the California independent hip hop scene for years,[citation needed] having begun rapping in the late 1980s. His first full-length album, Writes of Passage: Portraits of a Son Rising (which is part of the syllabus in San Francisco State's Filipino-American Literature Class[citation needed]), was released in 2003. He went on to release The Summer Exposure Mixtape in June 2007. He was also the former host/producer of Apex Express on 94.1FM KPFA in Berkeley, California, and was featured as a Keynote Speaker at the 2007 Sandiwa Conference. Currently, Kiwi coordinates and co-facilitates the Hip Hop Workshop series for young folks at San Francisco's Filipino Community Center, and is working on his next solo album, The People's Pistol, due Spring 2008.

Bambu, also known as Buck Taylor, is originally from the Watts community of Los Angeles. In his early career, he was part of the Bamboo Brigade and Poorhouse Projekts collectives before releasing his debut album, Self Untitled..., in 2002, as well as The .38 Revolver Mixtape in 2005. He released his second album, ...I Scream Bars for the Children..., on the 15th anniversary of the Los Angeles Riots on April 29, 2007. The album cover features Bambu eating popsicles with two children while a Ku Klux Klan member hangs from a noose in the background. Bambu released his latest full-length album, "...exact change..." on September 11 and set out on The Exact Change Tour with DJ Phatrick, which featured supporting acts, Ise Lyfe, Do D.A.T, D. Black, Zion I, EyeASage, Emassin, Khingz, Nam, Son Of Ran, Kronic Plague, Kore Ionz and Power Struggle. In April 2009, Bambu and DJ/producer Fatgums released an EP collaboration entitled, Beatrock Presents: Fatgums X Bambu ...A Peaceful Riot.... The musical chemistry between Bambu and Fatgums has been likened to that of 9th Wonder and MURS.[1] Bambu is currently recording an untitled project with Do D.A.T. of the Oakland based rap group, The Attik.

Group career

In May 2007, the group announced that they had "mutually decided to continue their careers as solo artists" and that they would be breaking up. Their final performance was on May 19, 2007 in Honolulu, Hawaii.[1] DJ Phatrick (born Patrick Huang) continues to tour with Bambu as on-stage DJ as he promotes his ...I Scream Bars for the Children... album. Kiwi is currently touring to promote his newest release, The Summer Exposure Mixtape a precursor for his second full-length studio album, which according to his MySpace page is set for release in November 2007 and is yet-to-be titled.
[edit] Personal life

In a June 2006 interview with www.popandpolitics.com reporter Zoneil Maharaj, Native Guns explained more about how their personal backgrounds. Both Kiwi and Bambu are former gang members who have chosen to redirect their energies in a more positive direction. Bambu discloses that he was immersed so deeply into the gang lifestyle that he was jailed for armed robbery before he even graduated from high school. When asked, they refused to mention their former affiliations by name in order to refrain from promoting the gang lifestyle in any way. Bambu also cites reading The Autobiography of Malcolm X as another watershed moment in his life.

Currently, they are deeply involved in organizing work in the Filipino community. Kiwi is most known for his affiliation with BAYAN USA in the San Francisco Bay Area while Bambu is most known as the Secretary General of Kabataang Maka-Bayan, Pro-People Youth in the Los Angeles area. The interview has since been removed from www.popandpolitics.com but is transcribed on the group's MySpace blog.

In a video documentary entitled The Guns Show directed by Tadashi Nakamura, Bambu reveals that he first became conscious to political issues after being exposed to Filipino prostitutes while stationed in the military in Japan, although he would not specify which branch.[2] The Guns Show was originally uploaded to the group's MySpace page and has since been relocated to YouTube.

Hopie Spitshard

Hopie Spitshard

About:
Hopie Spitshard is not your average rapper. Really. First, she independently released her debut album, The Diamond Dame, in July 2008, immediately garnering national attention and a nomination for URB’s Next 1000. Then, Hopie did a 180 & took a short hiatus to earn her doctorate from U.C. Hastings, emerging only to release 2 music videos & a T-shirt series w/ Adapt Clothing, & to perform at Paid Dues in April 2010. Now, as the ink on her law degree dries, Hopie is again returning to the music scene with an eclectic body of work, her second full-length album, Raw Gems
The pint-sized, tattooed academic has always carved her own, decisively rebellious path. has always carved her own decidedly rebellious path. To distract from realities of her rocky start in Manila, & a difficult, short-lived childhood in San Francisco, Hopie dove headfirst into music. To date, Hopie is self-taught &/or classically trained in violin, voice, music composition, spoken word, drums, & guitar. Still, Hopie's primary allegiance remains far from the ivory towers of music theory, lying markedly in experimentation with rap. In fact, Hopie’s brand of hip hop is anything but sullen, or conventional.

Raw Gems is an experiment. It’s an ode to inventive hip hop, drawing influence from 90s-era underground rap, dubstep and outer space. It’s an album made for a hip hop fan by a hip hop fan, boasting features ranging from anointed up-and-comers to pioneers of independent rap. Armed with inventive wordplay & no-holds-barred beatmaking by the same producer behind The Diamond Dame, 6Fingers, Raw Gems is sure to prove that 2 years hitting the books hasn’t derailed Hopie’s left brained schemes or creativity in the least.
