From humble beginnings in the limelight of the recent Battle of the Beats comes an aspiring Pinoy hip-hop musician who is the man behind Rawstarr, Mark Beats. You’ve definitely heard of Pricetagg’s music, CLR, Tiny Montana, Because and their tracks possess these sole “beats” that made the track much more lit to awesome. Know more a little bit of this Pinoy hiphop arsenal that engineered them viral Pinoy hiphop tracks.

PHS: Anong idea mo to come up with the group Rawstarr? And how you handpick your roster of artist?

Mark Beats: My idea is to put up a independent record label and a collective which composed of talented individuals from underground scene that deserves spotlight.

PHS: What motivates you to do a beat for an artist?

Mark Beats: One of the reasons that motivates me to do a beat for an artist is his/her style

PHS: Is there a Pinoy hiphop artist you haven’t done a beat with or what is your dream collaboration?

Mark Beats:

Yes, Madami Pa Sila Pero Isa Sa Mga Dream Collab Ko Is To Collab With Loonie Or RonThug. 

PHS: Any influences, inspirations on how you create beats?

Mark Beats: Watching beat making videos of Ryan Leslie and Scott Storch.

PHS: If you’re not a beat maker, what would you be in life in general?

Mark Beats: Either I’ll end up working in a corporate world or DJing every night in night clubs. I really don’t know. LOL.

—Becoming the champion in the Battle of the Beats, who would have known this beat maker will pursue more of his passion. Kung sa ordinaryong tao, kakainin na siya ng kasikatan, pera at malilihis sa totoong pinapangarap but not in the shoes of Mark Beats. He made beats to many artists and helped them shine with their signature tracks and still doing so at this point and not only that, he created Rawstarr which holds a selection of Pinoy hiphop artists that further elevated his career and of those in the label, as well.

We need more of this kind of professionality that is both humble and inspiring. Pinoy Hiphop will definitely reach levels we never thought of.

Asha: Why do you chose your A.K.A? What does it mean?

Klumcee: When i was in high school i had the most number of shot glasses accidentally broken during our drinking sessions. Changed the clumsy spelling a bit to make it my own.

Asha: Best Describe you? In one word?

Klumcee: Schizophrenic

Asha: When and How did you get started with Hip-Hop?
            Do you think this genre will last or will people get tired of it?

Klumcee: I started listening to Hiphop/Rap Music when i was 7. I started getting into Hiphop more when i did some research, i found out more about its culture and my life's story in it narrated by several different artists.

People get tired when there's no progress, when ALL talented and great artists start to halfass their works. That just might be it. It would die down for a time, until another hip hop hero rises up to save the day.

Asha: Who were your Music influences?

Klumcee: All the great musicians, famous or not (from the songwriters, producers, performers and most importantly the sound engineers!)


Asha: What Hip-Hop albums did you grow up listening to?

Asha: What would be your dream collaboration with any Rapper or Producer?

Klumcee: Kendrick Lamar and Skrillex

Asha: Since there are so many great Street Hip Hoppers, what determines who gets to the top? How              can you become a Famous Rapper?

Klumcee: Do your research and keep updated with what is happening around you, take your craft seriously, do not over complicate, do not procrastinate, patience hardwork and consistency is gold, study the classics.. repeat the process, it dont end, if you get stuck in that cycle that means you are bound for something really great.

Asha: How do you separate yourself from other artists?

Klumcee: Having my own style.

Asha: What do you usually do aside from Writing Songs, Producing Beats and being a Rapper?

Klumcee: Nothing more, that's just it. more research i guess.

Asha: Whats the difference of this generation's Music genre compare on your generation before?

Klumcee: Music from my generation when i was just a listener has changed dramatically. So many genre crossover, technicalities, digital revolution that made all these changes happen. Im happy in the current state of local hiphop or OPM as a whole, people are more aware, you cant just trick them with hype or so-called revolutionary-this-is-real-music type of shit you want to shove on everyone's throat. We have to think of how we can come up with good music that will get our message across without people getting confused. We have a voice that can influence the thinking and behaviour of people that follow us, if we really are making music to better our society, and out of love for the culture and humanity, we shouldn't be like losers instigating hatred and violence towards other artists. Instead focus that energy on making a classic musical piece that you, your followers and the whole world will be proud of.

Martin Briones

Martin Briones is an American born musician, singer-song writer, music producer and recording artist from Virginia Beach, Virginia. He is part of the triumvirate that forms SkyHigh Music. SkyHigh Music’s collective body of music production includes production with commercials (Chevrolet Asia), films (Three21 Films), video games (NBA2k), and major and independent recording artists. Their innovative sampling, musicianship, layering, and structuring, brings together an aesthetically and emotionally rewarding expression of music that makes it unique from all other works of music.

Early life & Beginnings

Martin Briones was born in Jacksonville, FL, to a mix raced couple. His father is a retired Filipino Navy officer while his mother is a teacher, of Scottish descent. Coming from a military family he had the unique opportunity in acquiring a wide array of musical influences from the different regions of the world. He has lived in Florida, California, Philadelphia, New Jersey, New York and Scotland, but was mainly raised in Virginia Beach, VA. Martin’s musically entailed family background includes a father who is a self-taught guitarist, mother who was a singer, both his brothers are musicians who formed their own punk-rock band The Razor Kings (GoKingdom.net) and his cousin, Lilly Aycud, a highly acclaimed trumpet player. Martin's musical evolution started at an early age where he first remembers memorizing, reciting and performing popular songs. He started taking piano lessons at age eight, and trumpet lessons three years later. In his early teen years, Martin showcased his creativity and musical ability through DJ-ing, song-writing & rapping. At 16, he decided to change his hoop dreams to a life dedicated to music. Around this time he was introduced to the production side of music by family friend Chad Hugo, of Neptunes and N.E.R.D. By 18, Martin had established his first, which turned out to be a well known studio (SkyHigh Studios VA) in the back of his father’s barbershop. Shortly after, he and his partners moved to NY/NJ to further pursue their musical aspirations and opened SkyHigh Studios NJ. Giving them access to the major record labels based in New York City they further built up their catalog and clientele.

Musical Style

Martin Briones gathers inspiration from legendary icons’ such as Stevie Wonder, Isley Brothers, Sade, Jodeci, Rakim, Big Pun and Jay Z. Martin is a true artist and student of music. He looks at his musical journey as a "continuous learning experience, where ideas and inspiration are manifested into music". He has lived and grown with the culture that inspires popular music of today. Drawing from his well travelled past he blends a well thought out sum of different styles and genres. An official "HipHop Head" at heart, he can still flawlessly incorporate varying ranges to his music; where he can't only be categorized as a rapper or singer and would prefer to be known for his keen songwriting and production capabilities. 

Future

Continuing to create relevant but timeless music, Martin has decided to come from behind the scenes and release his own album "AHEAD OF MYSELF" and continues to write and produce for other artists.
