Since the creation of Pinoyhiphopsuperstar what we wanted is to be a channel of
OPM or Local hiphop, in time we created enough influence that we can feature artist from here and outside, there are some artist we tried to reach and artist who trust us enough, Randomly i was able to talk to Chiemi and Niebla of Las Dueñas and ofcourse i grab the chance to interview her and know more details about the group. My bad, can’t let opportunity slips away, read what discuss below:

PHS: What does las duenas means? And can you give me a little history how the group was formed?

Niebla: Las Dueñas is Spanish for the boss girls (similar to Las Doñas in Tagalog). We met through our friends in the San Francisco hip hop scene, we wanted to have a name that would represent our identities as mixed heritage API’s who are also a part of a larger movement of emerging women artists at this time. We also wanted to let it be known that we don’t stand for no bullshit! We represent a new generation of women of color who aren’t afraid to stand up to the violence and sexism around us.

PHS: Who was yout musical influences? And what musical style do you adopt?

Niebla: We like to think that we have our own style of music that ties together elements of R&B, hip hop, pop, and trap. But some of the artists we look up to are Joyce Wrice, Erykah Badu, India Arie, Lauryn Hill, Ruby Ibarra, Saweetie, Kelela, and Jorja Smith

PHS: Where do you guys performed? Las duenas is based on where? Have you ever tried to perform in the other country or state? If so hows the reception of the crowd?

Niebla: We perform at many different types of venues that range from bars and nightclub venues to high schools and parks because our music touches on many different topics. Our most recent performances were at San Francisco’s 40th Annual Carnaval, John O’Connell High School, and Brick & Mortar Music Hall (for our own album release!). Up until now, we haven’t performed outside of California, but we do plan on touring different colleges around the United States including Amherst College in Massachusetts. These performances will include songs from our debut, self titled album, we just released this May.

PHS: how did you find out about Pinoy Hiphop Superstar? Do you have any connection or have ever collaborated, or known any local artist from the Philippines?

Niebla: We came across the blog one day when reading an online article on Ruby Ibarra. Like Ruby, Niebla is also a Bay Area-raised Filipino, her mother comes from Calamba in the Philippines.

In our recently released self-titled album “Las Dueñas,” we have a collaboration with Ruby Ibarra’s DJ, Mister Rey, as well as with Filipino American rapper Ro3lay. The name of the song is “Sunshine” and it illustrates through rap and song the urban Asian Pacific Islander experience in the Bay Area. Las Dueñas will also be on some upcoming collaborations with Filipino-American rapper, Bwan of Beatrock Music.

PHS: Your thoughts on the current era of hiphop right now?, your opinion about mumble rap?

Chiemi: I honestly don’t know much about the various hip hop movements happening in other places around the world right now, but I do know that out here we are seeing a huge increase in female artists in not only underground and local hip hop scenes but also in mainstream music, and movies as well. It’s a beautiful thing that the world is slowly starting to listen to woman of color after so many years of behind left out of the picture. I’m excited to see where this female-forward movement will take us.

Niebla: Hip-hop is constantly changing, and I think that for the most part, it’s gearing toward a more hyphy and party movement. I do listen to this new wave of hip-hop, but I’m looking for more music that represents people like me/us. There are a lot of rising female hip-hop/R&B artists, like Jorja Smith, Joyce Wrice, and Ruby Ibarra who look at the legacies of female hip-hop and cultivate them into fresher ideas that are becoming more and more apparent to the public eye. In my/our music I/we plan to replicate this idea while also giving our music a unique sound given our diverse backgrounds.

PHS: Your shout outs to anyone, message to fans?

Chiemi: Shout outs to our community!! We were both lucky enough to have been raised by tight-knit communities of hella San Francisco musicians, performers, and community organizers — and we wouldn’t be doing the work we do now without the endless love and guidance we’ve received from our neighborhood friends and families and extended families. These groups include: the Old Soul Kollective, PODER, the Return of the Cypher, Next Move SFC, SFSU’s Afro Cuban Jazz Ensemble, LJYE, Loco Bloco, MCCLA, Pine United Methodist, JCYC, JACL, St. Anthony’s Church, SF SOTA, CCSF, and more.

Random Interview with Kemikal Ali

1 half of the BB Clan group si sir Honorable Kemikal Ali, isa sa mga hinahangaan ko sa rap game specially to his wits and creative lines, his references are always unique and quite his style, pag pinakingan mo sya be prepared with the flows you will never hear somewhere else. Although galing sa golden age ng local hiphop kayang kaya parin makipag sabayan sa mga baguhan. Napasama rin sya sa grupong UPRISING, isang group ng mga ibang klaseng makakata na may kakaibang lalim ang bitaw and he perfectly fits with them. Nagkaroon ako ng chance to talk to sir Kemikal Ali last year. Ano ano nga bang nagpagusapan namin read the whole interview below:

PHS: Good day sir, so Ano ng bago kay Honourable Ali?

Kemikal Ali: Kalalabas lang noong Aug 31, 2018 ang unang album ko mag-isa mula Uprising na pinamagatang “Kemikal Ali x DJ Arbie Won – Bukas Uulan ng mg Bara”. Executive Produced by Anygma with additional music production nila Lowkey at DJ Umph.

PHS: Kamusta ang BB Clan? Circulo Pugantes? At papano ka napasama or nakaka collab ng Uprising?

Kemikal Ali: Since nasa Canada na nakabase si Simon, masasabi ko lang na retired na ang BB Clan. Wala pang plano sa ngayon ang Circulo Pugantes. Napasama ako sa Uprising sa pamamagitan ni DJ Arbie, at dahil marami na rin silang nagawang trabaho magkasama, dinakma ko na ang pagkakataon na sa Uprising na mailabas ang solo debut album ko.

PHS: Anong opinion mo sa bagong wave ng local rap artist natin ngayon, anong opinion mo sa knilang musical styles?

Kemikal Ali: Tungkol sa musical styles ng mga bago, anything goes yan, kung anong nararamdaman nila, yun din naman ang nailalabas nila. Kung wack ang pagkatao, wack din ang tunog kadalasan. Wack din naman ang makikinig nun. At kapag hindi wack, bravo! Yan yung tingin ko ay hindi nasisilaw sa hangad lang na sumikat at magpapansin.

PHS: Sino ang mga musical influences mo o pangarap mong maka collabo?

Kemikal Ali: Sila Francis M, Andrew E, Denmark, Freddie Mercury, Michael Jackson, KRS-One, Ice T, Big Daddy Kane, B-Real, Everlast, Ice Cube ang ilan sa mga impluwensya ko sa tugtugan. 
Nakacollab ko na sila Francis M, Andrew E, Denmark, at iba pang mahuhusay, pero sa ngayon medyo hindi ko alam kung sino ang gusto kong makatrabaho sa isang kanta. Malaking pressure kasi yang mga collaboration, exciting pero sobrang nakakastress sa panig ko.

PHS: Ano sa tingin mo ang hindi mo pa naiaambag sa larangan ng Pinoy hip-hop?

Kemikal Ali:Tagasulat ng mga kanta at tagabigkas lang ako ng mga sulat ko, hindi ko alam kung ano pa ang kailangan kong iambag.

PHS: Since isa ka rin sa maituturing na pioneer or galing sa Golden Era ng local hip-hop noong panahong wala pang internet ano sa tingin mo ang pinagbago ng OPM rap?

Kemikal Ali: Dahil sa pagdating ng internet, mas lumawak lang ang naabot ng OPM rap, sari-sari rin ang mga talino at topak na natuklasan at natutuklasan sa kalaunan.

Random Interview with Papa Rap

There’s this one time na naglalakad ako, nakakita ako ng isang lalaking puro tattoo, kinakarga nya yung baby nya para paarawan sa umaga, hindi ko ito na picturan pero it stuck to my mind dahil bumilib ako, bumilib ako to the idea of being a father, minsan even graduating sa mga nakasanayan nating gawin just to be a better parent is amazing. Dahil dito naalala ko ang isang Tatay ng batang artist na si B Yhelle, artist na nagpasikat ng kantang “Atab lang” binaligtad na salitang “Bata” na napapanahon dahil literal na bata pa si Yhelle, so bakit si Papa Rap ang ininterview ko at hindi si Yhelle? ito ay hindi dahil, mas makakasagot sya at mas maraming experience, kundi dahil sa pag mamahal at suporta ng isang Ama sa isang anak, sa pagpapa mana ng talento at hilig sa rap music.

PHS: How did you come up with the idea na gawing rapper si Yhelle? matagal na ba syang mahilig sa rap?

Papa Rap: Bata palang sya tyan, Nilalagayan ko headset tyan mommy nya,
Pinarinig ko mg kanta ko at mga hiphop songs. Rap songs, And sinasama ko sya sa mga events ko pag nagperfom po ako, Ganun ko po sya natrained.

PHS: So ibig sabihin pati si mommy ay hip-hop din? Hindi ba sila naging tutol sa ganun? Kamusta nman si Yhelle sa pag rarap?

Papa Rap: Opo hiphop din actually, kasama ko mommy nya sa isang track ko.

PHS: Sino bale ang naka diskubre sa kanya? is it your idea nung nakakitaan mo sya ng talento? or did someone initialize that idea?

Papa Rap: 3yrs old plang sya nangsumasabay na sya sa mga rap songs, Nag pe-freestyle na sya ng kung ano ano. Yung mga nursery rhyme ginagawa nyang rap. Tapos nung nagaral na sya magaling sya magmemorize

PHS: WOW! pero itong “Atab lang” lang obviously you compose it for her, meron ba syang input dito or mostly iyo lahat.

PHS: And did you expect na kakagatin ito ng mga rap fans?

Papa Rap: Di lang sinasadya yung “Atab lang” Kase nung sumali sya sa tula
Nakita ko na pwede ko sya gawan, so I try it out mag sulat, Hindi ko expected kase its an trial palang sa kanya, Mahilig talaga sya sa musik.

PHS: Anong pakiramdam ng parang biglang sikat si Yhelle?, ayos lang ba sa isang “Papa Rap” na mas mapansin si Yhelle habang ikaw naman ang nagsulat nito? or do you feel like this is passing of torch to her?

Papa Rap: Parang ganun na po pamana, Kasi nakakatuwa sa dame ng tinanim ko sa rap scene or mga pinagdaan ko sya npo lahat ng umaani, Sobrang proud ako sa kanya, babae pa po sya, kaya iba talaga.

PHS: From Rapido to Papa Rap? how did you come up with the change of rap name?

Papa Rap: Rapido sya yung oldschool rapper nung dati na kahit pano napansin at nakilala narin sa underground si Papa rap is may real name na binaligtad ko lang sur name ko papa and my real name is Ralph, and parang nag timing lang nung nag kaanak ako na dumiket na ang papa rap. Sabay lumabas na si atab byhelle

PHS: Whoooaaa that’s creative, so what can we expect from Papa rap and Yhelle in years to come?

Papa Rap: Mas magbgay pa ng inspiration sa mga parents nasa same line namin na sa pamamagitan ng music mabonding yung anak nila and create good and inspiring music para sa mga nagmamahal sa culture.
